Introduction
Music has
always had a integral part in our society. Since the very beginning of time
music has been playing a role in changing the emotional state of people. Many
people turn to music to take away the stress they get. Among these are
students, who are known to listen to music when completing assignments or when
studying for exams, drivers as it helps relieve the stress of the day and many
others. Types of music have been known to help individuals to concentrate on
tasks that they are given. In recent times many studies have been conducted
into finding whether music does really have any significant impact on our
cognitive processes. Some studies have shown music to be a distraction and
something that hinders the speed at which you make cognitive processes. Other
research papers have shown that constant listening of music improves the
reaction times of individuals to visual stimuli. The oxford
dictionary defines reaction time as “The
length of time taken for a person or system to respond to a given stimulus or
event.” Reaction time includes the ability to recognize the sensory impulse and
then execute a motor response toward the stimulus.so when conducting these
tests, we are testing the integrity of the central nervous system.It is noteworthy to note that there
are two types of reaction times which is dependent of how many visual stimuli
you are using. These two types are Simple and Choice. For Simple reaction time
a conscious decision is not often made, we can take the example of someone
touching a hot object, his hand almost immediately after having touched the hot
objects pulls back. Whereas with Choice, as the name suggests a conscious
decision is made. Simple reactions tend to be faster than those of Choice.Statement of TaskThe main purpose of this
investigation is to determine whether various tempos of music influence an
individual’s reaction time. 60 subjects are going to be subject to a Low bpm song,
Medium bpm song and high bpm song. Plan of investigation I’m testing people’s reaction time to
different tempos of music so, I will use 60 subjects which will be divided into
3 groups. One group will listen to a LOW BPM while taken their reaction time
test, another will listen to a MEDIUM BPM track and the third group will listen
to a HIGH BPM track. I will use a computer based program to test their reaction
times. I will use a bar graph to analyse the data as well as a X^2 test to show
the dependence on various music tempos to reaction times.        Raw Data

This table shows the raw data that I
had collected from the 60 students. These students ranged from grade 9 to grade
12.This table includes the 3 trials each subject took as well as the average of
the 3 trials.I took the averages of the trials for
each of the 3 groups and made a bar graph to represent the data. From this we
see that those listening to music with a low BPM has the fastest reaction time
among the groups , and the group listening to Medium BPM music has the medium
reaction time and the group listening to high BPM music has the highest
reaction time
