Laser ablation propulsion
is powered beam propulsion in which a pulsed laser ablates the target materials
(solid or liquid) and then producing thrust. By the resultant force of
reaction, the thrust produced on the target surface. The laser ablation propulstion
is use to study the specific impulse, momentum coupling co-efficient (Cm),
efficiency and thrust. The laser ablation process and properties
has great importance for laser surface micro processing and elemental surface
mapping (Semerok et al., 1999).

In 1972, Arthur kantrowitz put forward laser
propulsion for propelling vehicles in space as an alternative to chemical
propulsion. He is a founder of laser propulsion. So far, dedicated several
studies to laser ablation propulsion in vacuum and atmospheric environment. To
get improved propulsion efficiency in vacuum and atmospheric environment,
designed the propelled target of different geometrical ordered, different
layers and materials (Qiang et al.,
2014). The propelled target characteristics will affect the propulsion
efficiency. Thickness of the target material will influence the efficiency and
many other parameters of Laser ablation propulsion. Enhancement in coupling coefficients measured from laser
interaction using multilayer materials reported by (Nehls et al., 2002).

 Multi-layers of materials formed by
alternating layers of different materials and these alternating layers are as
thin as few atoms. The solid target with multi-layers consists of a thin
polymeric transparent material coated with some thin multi-metallic layers. The
orientation of thin multi-metallic layers in such a way that first the laser
incident through the polymeric transparent layer, and then interacts with the
multi-metallic layers. Extra-ordinary strength, thermal resistance, hardness
and unpredicted innovative properties offer by multi-layers of different
materials. Thicknesses range of individual layer from few atoms to thousands of
atoms but thicknesses of multilayers range from few to more than 200,000 atoms. Multilayers are one of the materials that
fabricated and designed at the atomic level, a so called “atomic
engineering” by Barbee. He says. “We are building multi-layer
materials molecule by molecule and atom by atom,”.

The aim of my
work is to investigate the specific impulse, coefficient coupling and many
other parameters of LAP of the multilayered solid target by nano second pulsed
laser in air and atmospheric pressure experimentally. The
multilayered solid target irradiated by pulsed laser Nd: YAG (5ns, 1064nm)
under required conditions of temperature and pressure. Plasma plume of multilayered
solid target recorded by CCD and measured significant parameters of LAP.
