Many cultures throughout history have referenced to distinct patterns in the sky formed by stars. These patterns have been called many things but now scientists refer to them as constellations. Often times in our society we forget what a privilege it is to have tracking tools and measuring devices but 5000 years ago they used these constellations to track time and be able to tell where they are. They are considered to form the outlines of notable beings, animals or even technology. and then are named after those perceptions. Some of these names come from Ancient Rome or even farther back in Ancient Egypt. A couple have more modern names as they are seen as forming new technology. The International Astronomical Union recognizes 88 constellations that cover the entire northern and southern sky. These 88 constellations are used by astronomers or navigators identify regions where stars or other important matter are. Constellations also help in tracking man made satellites. Constellations move in a westward trajectory because of earth’s motion along its orbit around the sun. Inside constellations there are smaller groupings of stars called asterisms. They’re different because constellations are officially recognized areas of the sky and asterisms do not have officially determined boundaries. However, some asterisms are named and can be found in certain constellations. Constellations are made up of stars. Stars are self luminous, spheroidal body of great mass that produces energy and are held together by their own gravity. They are located all over the galaxy. Some are more prominent in the night sky and those usually make it into constellations. Although they look the same from earth, all stars are different. Some can be 250 times bigger than the sun and some can be 250 times smaller. They range in color from red to yellow to blue. Stars are made up of gases and metals. The most important gases needed to make a Star are helium and hydrogen which are two of the lightest elements. Star can shine by burning their hydrogen into helium in their core which is called nucleosynthesis. Then, later in their lives they create smaller amounts of heavier elements like carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. When they run out of fuel, they eject all the elements so they are pushed out into space and then are later recycled into a new star. The birth of a Star starts with acold, large cloud of dust and gas. These are nebulaes.
