Cameco
Corporation’s Eagle Point Mine is an active underground uranium operation
located at the Rabbit Lake mine site in northern Saskatchewan. Eagle Point
Deposit was initially discovered in 1980 by Gulf Minerals Canada Ltd. while
drill testing geophysical and geochemical anomalies northeast along strike from
the Collins Bay Uranium deposits. The Eagle Point deposit is largely under the
bed of Collins Bay. Sublevel open stopping method is used at Eagle Point mine
to extract the uranium. The uranium mined at Eagle Point Mine is processed at
Rabbit Lake Mill. Cameco Corporation is expanding Eagle Point Mine below the
542 level to extract a new ore zone.

I
would like to develop a mining plan to successfully mine the new area as my
capstone project. The purpose of this project is to develop an optimum mining
plan based on the selection of an appropriate mining method to extract a new
ore zone. The following tasks would be included in this project:

A detailed background investigation into the
Rabbit Lake Mine area.

·        
A literature review which included backfill,
mining methods, and required equipment.

·        
A preliminary analysis of mining methods using
the UBC (University of British Columbia) mining method selection and Taylor’s
Rule.

·        
Development of infrastructure tonnage and costs.

·        
Use of AutoCAD/Vulcan software to present the
initial development of the mining plan.

·

Mineral reserve estimates for the new mining
zone, including cut-off grade, dilution, and recovery rates.

Develop a production schedule to successfully
mine the new area.

Methodology

The primary step
for this project is to do the literature review based on detailed information
such as the
history of Rabbit Lake Mine, Eagle Point Mine’s current production, orebody
shape, geology, cost analysis, current mining method, equipments available at
site and project constraints. The mining method will be based on the ore-body
geometry and rock mass characteristics. The UBC mining method and Taylor’s Rule
will be used to select the optimum method. The production rates, tonnage, value
of deposit, operating costs, equipment requirement and design calculations will
be done after the selecting mining method. The layout will be designed as per
ore deposit shape, equipment size and any other requirements to complete the
operations. Eventually, a production schedule will be developed to mine the new
ore zone using the Microsoft Project.
